What the writers said about 12 Short Stories

R.L. Nel

Before I became a copywriter, I used to be a journalist. Even as my career evolved from print to online, one thing remained constant: the sacredness of the deadline. My stories were always filed on time. After all, it was my job.

Like many other journos, I dreamed of writing a book. Or even a short story or two. But I had no idea where to start. I bought hundreds of books on writing techniques. I even read some of them and completed a few of the exercises. But soon, the books began collecting dust and my random snippets of scribbles progressed no further.

When my friend Mark encouraged me to sign up to Deadlines for Writers’ short story challenge, I was sceptical. However, the combination of receiving a prompt and a deadline is magical. Forty-eight short stories and a completed manuscript later, I am living proof that these challenges work.

ENTER WITH CAUTION!

You can’t hide behind excuses or doubts – the deadline is looming.

Words spin into stories you couldn’t have imagined.

Your life changes as you go from ideas to finished pieces

Each time you breathe a sigh of relief as you click submit, saying to yourself you won’t leave it to the last minute – you lied.

The above sounds like a fantasy, but ever since I joined Deadlines in 2017, my writing has evolved into a majestic beast. I beam at the page even if it’s a work in progress as I submitted something I didn’t have a moment before (sometimes 20 minutes before deadline still a blank page). Each piece written is an achievement to be proud of. My fellow writers and Mia make this platform one of a kind and a place of safety and growth.

Join the adventure armed with your pen (mostly laptop). You won’t regret it.

How committed are you as a writer? How committed would you like to be? If you want to develop as a writer, then the commitment to the 12 Short Stories membership will do that for you in different ways. The writing sessions are really great because you get to meet others, you’re no longer alone in this journey! Everybody is super helpful. You can ask anything. Apart from writing together, Mia provides excellent input on writing techniques. She facilitates exercises that have given me great story ideas!Â
