Terms and Conditions Short Story Competition 2020

Please read the terms and conditions carefully. By submitting your story you accept the terms and conditions. Any stories that do not follow these guidelines will be disqualified. The entry fee is US$35 and must be paid via Paypal. It is non-refundable.

Terms & Conditions

  1. The $35 entry fee is compulsory and non-refunable.
  2. This is a short story competition. The fictional, unpublished short story must be submitted on the deadlinesforwriters.com website by midnight(GMT+02:00), 16 December 2020. There are two deadlines:
  • The first, 19 November 2020, is not compulsory, but it gives you an opportunity to give and receive feedback.
  • You can rewrite your story before resubmitting it for the final deadline.
  • The second deadline, 16 December 2020, is final and compulsory.
  1. The word count is 1200 words. No story under 1150 or over 1250 will be eligible.
  2. The story must be submitted in English.
  3. Judge’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into.
  4. Friends and family of the judges are not eligible.
  5. The competition is open to any writer over the age of 18.
  6. Only previously unpublished stories may be submitted. Unpublished means that it has not been published on any website, personal or otherwise, blog, personal or otherwise, any publications
  7. Copyright remains with the writer.
  8. By submitting your entry, you agree and warrant that (i) your entry has not been published before; (ii) your entry is entirely your own original work; and (iii) nothing in your entry is defamatory, private or an infringement of copyright or other intellectual property right or in any way a breach of another’s rights. Any entry in breach of this clause will be disqualified from participating in and winning the competition.
  9. No team entries allowed.
  10. Entries may not be posted without payment. If the Paypal account name and author’s name differ please inform Deadlines for Writers.
  11. The stories must be submitted as per the instructions on the website.
  12. The winning story will be published on deadinesforwriters.com.
  13. All announcements regarding the competition will be made on deadinesforwriters.com.
  14. The winners will be contacted via email, using the address supplied upon entry.
  15. Personal details will only be used for the administration of the award and will not be shared with a third party. (Please check our privacy policy for more information regarding the information you share with the site.)
  16. Ineligible, obscene or fraudulent entries will be disqualified.
  17. 12 Short Stories reserves the right to modify any part of the competition should it be necessary.
  18. 12 Short Stories reserves the right to exclude entrants and withhold prizes for violating any of the terms and conditions.
  19. All entrants will indemnify the Deadlines for Writers against loss or damage (including any legal costs or expenses and any compensation costs and disbursements paid by the Deadlines for Writers team on the advice of legal counsel to compromise or settle any claim) occasioned by Deadlines for Writers in consequence of any breach of the warranties contained in these terms and conditions or arising out of any claim alleging that the submitted entry constitutes an infringement of copyright or contains libellous, obscene or defamatory matter.
  20. The prizes cannot be exchanged for cash, transferred, swapped or substituted.
  21. 12 Short Stories cannot be held responsible for stories that are late, delayed, illegible or incomplete.
  22. If the winner cannot be reached after several attempts by Deadlines for Writers the judges will choose another entry.
  23. The prizes:
    1. The grand prize winner will win a voucher to the value of $599 to purchase an online course of their choice in the Writers Write Store. Plus free entry into the 52 Scenes in 52 Weeks Challenge for 2021 valued at US$120.
    1. The second-place winner will win a voucher to the value of $299 to purchase an online course of their choice in the Writers Write Store. Plus free entry into the 52 Scenes in 52 Weeks Challenge for 2021 valued at US$120.
    1. The third-place winner will win a voucher to the value of $199 to purchase an online course of their choice in the Writers Write Store. Plus free entry into the 52 Scenes in 52 Weeks Challenge for 2021 valued at US$120.
    1. The fourth-place winner will win a voucher to the value of $199 to purchase an online course of their choice in the Writers Write Store. Plus free entry into the 52 Scenes in 52 Weeks Challenge for 2021 valued at US$120.
    1. The Reader’s choice award will win a voucher to the value of $199 to purchase an online course of their choice in the Writers Write Store. Plus free entry into the 52 Scenes in 52 Weeks Challenge for 2021 valued at US$120.

24.  Prizes cannot be used for sale items, cannot be transferred or exchanged for cash.
