Dear Lourens
I was intrigued by the picture you posted first and it suits the poem well. The capital letters dotted in the poem were a bit bothersome at times, but overall I liked the fantasy component. -

I agree with you. 2020 has been a brutal year.
I have had 11 funerals this year and at 5 am this morning received the sad news of the passing of another dear friend this morning after she suffered a pulmonary embolism during the night. She leaves 2 daughters bereft. One is disabled and in a wheelchair.

Hi Anthea, Oh wow this poem made my heart weep for her. How awful to be so afraid of ones partner. You have captured her fear so well and also I can picture him with his grimace and cold dead eyes. Really well written, but such sad subject matter.
I have one question – did you mean lightening to be the lightning that we see during a storm? The spelling you have used means this: a drop in the level of the uterus during the last weeks of pregnancy as the head of the fetus engages in the pelvis.
Well done and thanks for sharing. I hope you and your family have a wonderful Christmas.
Hello Anthea,
This is indeed chilling and tells a violent narrative. I wonder if it would work as a prose poem with slightly longer lines? For instance in the third verse, would you consider: ‘Their footfalls were soft, but in the cold ink / of his eyes, something hard floated.’ and in the final verse: ‘In an instant, she folded over like a broken match; / gravel embedded in her trembling knees.’ Just a suggestion which should be ignored if you feel strongly the other way.
All the best for the coming festive season and I look forward to reading more of your poetry in 2021.
A very powerful poem, showing the grim reality of violence in a relationship. Thank you for sharing, Anthea.
Great poem Anthea. It leaves me cold – evoking emotion in the reader is always a good thing – and I love the title. It is very apt as the 16 days of activism have just passed.
Your words are masterful brushes in the painting of this situation and the piece flows well.
Well done and thanks for sharing.
