Prompt to Publication | Charles R. Bucklin
Today we are celebrating Charles R. Bucklin. Since 12 Short Stories started in 2017 we’ve seen many of our writers go on to publish and accomplish great things with their writing. The Prompt to Publication emails are all about celebrating these writers and their wonderful stories.
I hope these interviews will help you and teach you how to use 12 Short Stories to build your author platform.
Author feature: I’d like to introduce Charles R. Bucklin.
Charles completed the 12 Short Stories Challenge in 2020.
Has 12 Short Stories helped you as a writer?
Charles R. Bucklin: I will say that 12SS has helped me immensely. I started my writing journey back in July of 2019. I had no idea what I was doing when I created my blog readmykooltales.com – I just wanted to do something creative and fun. Shortly after that, I joined 12 SS to help me learn more about the craft of writing and what it means to be a writer. The monthly challenges have been instructive and the feedback has given me the confidence to write and submit my work to magazines and anthologies. And for that, I am extremely grateful. So thank you, Mia, for creating a safe space for us all. I really appreciate being a member of such a super talented group of people.
What have you published?
Charles R. Bucklin: Class is in Session just came out on October 24th in Flash Fiction Magazine. Two stories – The House Amongst the Trees and Run like Hell will be published in the 2020 Indie Author Anthology. And I was just notified that Fetching Water was just accepted and will be published in FFM sometime in the next 8 weeks.
No novel yet. But, I wouldn’t count that out from happening. Lol.
How did 12 Short Stories help you?
Charles R. Bucklin: 12SS gave me the inspiration to write. Having a monthly challenge really lit a fire under my butt to write and gave me the impetus to explore different genres. I don’t think I could have continued writing without positive monthly feedback and support.
After sixty-five years of “hard livin” – Charles R. Bucklin decided it was time to write some stuff down.
He is an author, humorist, fantasy, and horror enthusiast. He is also the creator of the ongoing short story blog Readmykooltales.com – which is going on its second year online.
In 2020 several of his stories were published online in Spillwords, Short Humour Site and Flash Fiction Magazine. Two of his stories – Run Like Hell and House Among the Leaves were included in the 2020 Indie Author’s Short Story Anthology which is now available for purchase on Amazon.
Charles lives in Sonoma County, California with his wife and two dogs named Roxi and Camille. He still listens to metal.
Read “Lemora” by Charles R. Bucklin. It’s his favourite.
“Every mornin, Ah’d git up feelin’ like Ah got no sleep.
My dreams were filled with red painted lips… the color of blood.
Thar are shadows of animals that prowl around me in the dark jest in the periphery of my vision. Ah can’t see ’em – but, Ah know there thar.
Ah’m surrounded by pale faced haunts that would love nothin’ better than to tear me to pieces – leavin’ nothin’ but bloody hunks o’ meat.
Then thar is the howl of a wolf who’s soul is in torment, the chittering sound of bats and the shriek of carrion birds.
Like a summoned infernal Angel – Lemora appears – and all the creatures of evil fall silent.
She is clothed in darkness, her complexion is pale but, her red lips are full with life – as if any moment a droplet of blood might escape the corner of her mouth and cascade down chin staining her decollete.”
Well done, Charles!
